A typically festive yet intimate Passover gathering transformed itself this year into a grander celebration, bringing participants and elected officials from all over the Bay Area.
For close to a decade, one Belmont household has hosted Mimouna, a Moroccan Jewish celebration that marks the end of Passover with an array of sweet desserts, music and lots of dancing.
“There is a ton of dancing, especially belly dancing, a lot of Moroccan songs, drums and all types of live music,” a spokesperson for the Bay Area Jewish Coalition, San Mateo, said.
Mimouna is a long held celebration, originally a Maghrebi Jewish tradition, and is still held throughout the world, including Morocco, Israel and France.
“In Israel, it’s across many families. It’s an open house type of thing,” she said. “The whole point is that the community is welcome.”
This year, the celebration took place in a somewhat larger venue to accommodate the nearly 300 guests, which also included elected officials throughout the Peninsula.
“The community is suffering, and the last few years have been very hard. We wanted to show the beautiful parts of our tradition,” she said, adding that the event also became somewhat of an interfaith celebration, with Christians and Hindus participating in the event as well.
