Adults ages 50 and older in San Mateo County can enjoy the summers they once experienced as kids, with around 30 events planned from June to August to get seniors to never stop exploring.
Organized by AgeUp, an advocacy organization supporting county residents to age with dignity, the 2026 Summer Camp invites older adults to take on new adventures, take hands-on workshops, experience the outdoors and build skills all for the sake of fun.
The camp “redefines what aging can look like,” AgeUp Executive Director Elyse Brummer said.
Many adults still crave adventure, they have curiosity and they want to grow. Creating programming that allows residents to accomplish bucket-list experiences is just as vital as end-of-life care, Brummer said.
“I think there’s a preconceived notion that aging services overall focus on crisis care needs, it’s very reactive,” Brummer said. “But this is simply focused on making sure they have fun and can continue to invest in themselves.”
Summer Camp programs range from food and drink experiences, outdoor adventures, and crafts, books and games.
With registration just open for a couple weeks, a hands-on program to learn about beekeeping is already full of sign-ups of interested elders looking to suit up and peer inside an active beehive. An event to learn how to bake croissants and pain au chocolat with The Baker Next Door in Redwood City has also proven to be popular.

There is also a book club event with author Caroline Paul in Foster City, chocolate truffle making in San Mateo, an introduction to glass blowing in Half Moon Bay and surfing lessons in Pacifica. Seniors can also take a class on cocktail mixology in Half Moon Bay, discover the science behind making salsa, and learn how to make a leather wallet in San Carlos.
San Mateo County was the first county to recognize the devastating impacts of social isolation, and the Summer Camp programming looks to address this issue head on with a slew of events that bring community members together with intention.
“We wanted to approach aging in a different vein, not focused on decline, but on living your best life at 80, 90, 100 years old, and to think of things from a perspective of wonder, creating meaning and building connections,” Brummer said.
The list of Summer Camp classes were decided upon to ensure older adults have a variety of programs to choose from, rather than what may be run-of-the-mill events.
“I’m also in my 50s, and I feel like I’m just getting started,” Brummer said. “I want to try new things.”
Summer Camp programs range in costs, with some free to sign up and the most expensive being $350 to learn how to fly a plane at the San Carlos Flight School. All intend to get seniors out of the house and enjoy fun like they once did in summer camp.
