The Bay Area’s worst freeway interchange for traffic congestion is in San Francisco, according to a new annual analysis by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
Commuters headed north on Highway 101 and then east onto Interstate 80, from Cesar Chavez Boulevard to the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel on the Bay Bridge, collectively log 14,600 vehicle hours of delay each weekday between 12:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., according to the MTC.
The amount of time commuters spend stuck in congestion didn’t grow last year, but it has increased by 80 percent since 2010.
According to MTC Chair Jake Mackenzie, the average commute hasn’t gotten any worse, but it also hasn’t gotten any better. This comes, however, after four years of seeing commute times get worse.
After the northbound Highway 101 to eastbound Highway 80 interchange, the next most congested stretch of freeway is westbound Highway 80 from state Highway 4 to the Bay Bridge toll plaza, where commuters collectively log an average 12,650 vehicle-hours of delay each weekday in the East Bay.
In the South Bay, southbound Highway 101 from Sunnyvale to San Jose has the third-worst congestion in the region. Northbound Interstate Highway 680, from Fremont to Sunol, took No. 4, and eastbound Highway 4 from Martinez to Concord took No. 5.
Despite new transportation options for commuters, MTC officials say freeway congestion levels are still higher than experienced during previous economic booms.
