Retail sales over the Thanksgiving weekend dropped after the rush of the first, traditional shopping day, but were still 3.6 percent higher than the same period last year in the Bay area, reports say. According to a major check processing company, the Telecheck Retail Index indicates that sales were up 3.8 percent by dollar volume over last year's Thanksgiving nationwide and up 3.2 percent in California.

Sales over the entire weekend, however, were predictably lower than the highs achieved on the day after Thanksgiving, when Bay area sales were up 5.2 percent over last year and national spending was up 4.6 percent.
