Oscar nominations snubs and surprises: Paul Mescal and Ariana Grande among biggest oversights
The Oscar nominations had their share of snubs and surprises. Ariana Grande and Paul Mescal were expected to be nominated but missed out Thursday. Delroy Lindo received his first nomination for “Sinners,” while Guillermo del Toro also missed out on a directing nod for “Frankenstein.” Kate Hudson's campaign paid off with a nomination for “Song Sung Blue,” leaving no room for Chase Infiniti or Amanda Seyfried. The horror film “Weapons” received unexpected recognition, but Jafar Panahi's “It Was Just an Accident” was overlooked for best picture and director. Anime fans were disappointed as “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle” was snubbed as well.
'Sinners' makes history, setting Oscars nomination record
Ryan Coogler’s blues-steeped vampire epic “Sinners” led all films with 16 nominations to the 98th Academy Awards, setting a record for the most in Oscar history. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters showered “Sinners” with more nominations Thursday than ever before, breaking the 14-nomination mark set by “All About Eve,” “Titanic” and “La La Land.” Coogler was still trying to process the record-breaking haul when reached by The Associated Press this morning. Paul Thomas Anderson’s father-daughter revolutionary saga “One Battle After Another” trailed in second with 13 nominations of its own, making it a banner day for Warner Bros.

A breakdown of how Oscar best picture nominees fared at the box office and which studios dominated
Warner Bros. leads the pack with 30 nominations for this year's Oscars, announced during the 98th annual Academy Award nominations. Films like “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” helped the studio achieve this feat. The Oscars, hosted by Conan O'Brien will be presented on March 15 in Los Angeles. This year's best picture nominees have collectively earned nearly $1.4 billion at the global box office, according to Comscore. That doesn't account for the theatrical runs of “Frankenstein” and “Train Dreams” since Netflix doesn't report box-office totals. Other studios with significant nominations include Neon with 18, Netflix with 16, and Focus Features with 13.

Movie Review: 'Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!' is a sweeping tribute to a comic genius
It’s not often we get to pay tribute, in full, to our giants while they’re still with us. But in “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!” Judd Apatow dutifully and affectionately celebrates the laugh-filled life of a comedy legend who’s still here to tell the story — and the jokes — himself, writes Associated Press Film Writer Jake Coyle in his review. “The 99 Year Old Man,” which debuts Thursday in two parts on HBO and HBO Max, is a big-hearted tribute to an indefatigable comic force who did more than most anyone to lighten the mood of the 20th century.
Sundance kicks off in Utah with powerful premieres and emotional tributes to Robert Redford
PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — The Sundance Film Festival kicks off Thursday morning in Utah, marking the first year without founder Robert Redford. His daughter, Amy Redford, shared in an interview Wednesday with The Associated Press that her father believed everyone has a story, a principle guiding this year's festival. Over a dozen films will premiere on the opening day. They will include Amir Bar-Lev’s documentary on mountain climbing, Rachel Lambert’s drama “Carousel,” and Judd Apatow’s film about comedian Maria Bamford. Other highlights include a look at playwright Luis Valdez's legacy and a midnight movie by Casper Kelly. The festival runs through Feb. 1.
At Paris Fashion Week, Issey Miyake turns quiet control into a statement
PARIS (AP) — Issey Miyake has brought a monastic calm to Paris, staging its IM Men show inside the medieval Collège des Bernardins and sending out sweeping, robe-like silhouettes that matched the venue’s stillness. Stone vaulting and filtered light gave the fall 2026 runway a spiritual, almost devotional mood on Thursday. The clothes echoed that atmosphere with long lines, wrapped fronts and drape that suggested religious garb — without tipping into costume. It was one of the season’s standouts, and among IM Men’s most assured runway showings. The point, as the brand put it, is to take a desire to “straighten up,” to feel “proper” and express it through cloth.
