Serra’s Brooks Taner and Menlo-Atherton’s Izzi Henig capped the swimming season with strong performances at the state championships in Clovis Saturday.
Taner, a junior, took home a pair of third-place finishes. Swimming the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay, Taner teamed with seniors Alec Cullen, Riley Scanlan and Daniel Gilmartin to finished third in a time of 1:32.32, just behind winner Oak Ridge’s time of 1:31.32 and Northwood, which posted a time of 1:31.46. The Padres quartet also finished 11th in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:06.11.
Taner then added a third-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 47.61. Cullen would would later finish fourth in the 100 breast, finishing with a time of 54.82.
Henig, a senior, capped her high school career with a fourth-place finish in the 50 free, covering the distance in a time of 22.95, a half-second behind winner Amalie Fackenthal of Country Day. Henig came back with a second-place finish in the 100 free, again falling to Fackenthal, who blew away the field by nearly a second. Henig finished with a time of 49.35 – Fackenthal was the only swimmer to clock a sub-49-second time, finishing with a 48.43. Henig then helped the Bears to a 10th-place finish in the 200 free relay, teaming with Sofia De La Vega, Haley Arrington and Ava Peyton to post a time of 1:36.39. Nicole Dundas would replace Peyton for the M-A girls’ 12th-place finish in the 400 free relay, joining Henig, Arrington and De La Vega to post a time of 3:31.36.
There were some other strong finishes for other swimmers on the Peninsula. Morgan Hawes, a freshman at Carlmont, will be one one to watch in the coming years as she finished 14th in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.10. Hawes also made the “B” finals of the 500 free, finishing in 15th place with a time of 5:00.64.
A pair of San Mateo swimmers also made it to Saturday’s finals. Emma Lepisova took fifth in the 100 back, finishing with a time of 55.03, while Valeriya Nasedkina was 13th in the 50 free “B” final with a time of 23.63.
On the boys’ side, El Camino’s Nick Tan wrapped up his prep career with a 14th-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.08.
In the diving finals, Crystal Springs’ Nike Agunbiade took home fifth in the 1-meter diving event, finishing with a total score of 458.95. El Toro’s Savannah Stocker captured the title with 507.55 points.
