Menlo to forfeit game to Wilcox this week
The Menlo football team forfeited its game against Wilcox Friday night, citing injury and illness in a press release the school sent out Tuesday morning.
“After extensive consideration and discussion, Menlo School has made the difficult decision to forfeit this Friday’s varsity football game against Wilcox. A combination of injuries and illness has left the Knights with too few healthy players to compete safely,” the press release said.
Menlo, which entered the season with a roster of 24 to play in the rugged Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division, is coming off a 28-0 loss to Los Gatos, a perennial Northern California power that features a roster nearly three times as big with 66 players listed.
“The coaching staff and school administration prioritizes the health and well-being of our student-athletes,” the press release continued. This decision allows our players the necessary time to recover fully before returning to the field. The JV game will be played Friday.
“Our sincere appreciation goes to our community and to the Wilcox High School varsity football program for their support and understanding.”
The forfeit loss will drop Menlo into third place in the Bay Division standings with a 2-2 record, while Wilcox improves to 3-1. The Knights are still scheduled to play Sacred Heart Prep in the Valpo Bowl at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7.
