Editor,
Our time is now. Gov. Newsom’s bold move to counter Texas’s unprecedented mid-decade redistricting plan is to be praised, and must pass in November’s special election.
For those not following this, Proposition 50, AKA the Election Rigging Response Act, was created in response to Texas Gov. Abbott signing into law that its legislature can redraw voting districts in order to marginalize the mostly Democratic-voting majority Black and Latinx residents in those locales. By stacking those districts with predominantly white Republican voters, President Trump gets to rig the system in favor of adding more Republicans in the House to support his agenda.
Gov. Newsom said to hell with that. He’s fighting fire with fire, something many have wanted to see the democrats do for quite some time. In November’s special election, we voters will have an opportunity to do just that. So, if Texas voters in the new districts send five more republicans to Congress, California’s redistricting will ensure that democrats have a better shot at countering this, and other red states following Texas’s lead. Do many of us like seeing this happening in our teetering democracy? No.
But how else can democracy get back on track without California showing its moxie, and sending a message that playing fair doesn’t seem to matter to many in the MAGAsphere. When they get that message, maybe we’ll start to bring our country back in line with the values that we were once revered for around the globe.

Yawn, snore… Jordan Sher irrationally rationalizing the threat to democracy known as Proposition 50. So Jordan is asserting that being a threat to democracy and not playing fair are the response to an imagined threat to democracy? I’m not surprised Missouri (I believe they’ve already set new districts) and other red states see Newsom’s attempt at cheating and are joining the redistricting war that Newsom started. Vote NO on the threat to democracy known as Proposition 50. When they get that message, maybe we’ll start to bring our country back in line with the values that we were once revered for around the globe.
