A group of San Carlos residents tried to advocate for preserving the tennis courts at Burton Park, but the city’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission opted to endorse a redevelopment plan for the site that may remove them.
The commission met Wednesday, Oct. 10, and discussed the Parks Master Plan Draft outlines the goals and intentions for updating park amenities throughout the city. One consideration is revisions to Burton Park.
One of the proposed options to reimagine Burton Park includes removing the three tennis courts and one full-length basketball court on the site, which has prompted tennis lovers to send more than 600 emails to the commission to oppose the proposal.
“Removing the Burton tennis courts would be another thorn in the side of the San Carlos tennis community, which recently saw the loss of tennis courts in Highlands Park,” a petition website reads.
The website states that the Burton Park tennis courts are consistently in use and they host events throughout the year.
The commission ultimately endorsed the option that proposed removing the courts, but commissioners noted the immense public outreach and asked for additional measures be taken to keep the courts or replace them at another site.
The Parks Master Plan Draft is still in its refining stages. The review by the commission on Wednesday will provide recommendations for consideration by the City Council at a later date this year.
San Carlos currently has 186 acres of parkland, including developed and open space areas, that include 17 parks and five recreation facilities.
The city is prioritizing parks and open space areas as it anticipated a huge influx of residents in coming years. An estimated 15,000 new residents and hopefully 8,000 housing units by 2045 demonstrate a need for more available public access spaces.
