The federal government closed FY 2024-25 Sept. 30 with a deficit of $1.8 trillion. That’s an $8 billion improvement over the previous year. After all the debate and promises, $8 billion in savings is what we got. Yes, I know a lot of you will say at least we see savings. For perspective, San Mateo County’s annual budget is around $5 billion, so don’t get too excited about the federal budget savings.
Meanwhile, corporate income tax receipts dropped by 15% ($77 billion) compared to FY 2023-24, largely due to the new legislation passed by the current administration. The impact? AT&T expects a $1.5-$2 billion reduction in cash taxes. T-Mobile anticipates a $1.5 billion annual tax cut. MGM Resorts, thanks to bonus depreciation, will swing from paying $100 million to receiving a $100 million refund.
And yet, on the personal side: my property taxes always go up, my home and car insurance went up, medical bills up, utilities like garbage, water, electricity and gas are all up, grocery staples like meat, avocados and tomatoes are all up.
So here we are, individuals paying more while corporations are paying less? Is it unreasonable to ask that everyone pays their fair share?

Hilarious. Thanks, Mr. Surraco, for highlighting a difference between federal and state governments. Please assign your blame to the correct entity. Federally, you should be thanking our (yes, our) great President Trump for lowering your tax bill. You should be blaming Democrats in California who continually raise your property taxes, home and car insurance, medical bills, and rising utilities. As for grocery staples, I’m unsure how many folks put avocados and tomatoes on that list. Regardless, the bottom line is that Trump giveth you more money and California taketh more of your money. Voters get the government they deserve – so start voting Republican if you want expenses to go down. Otherwise, live with it. A recommendation, perhaps start growing your own avocados and tomatoes. Of course, assuming you’re not asked to ration water, your water bill will likely go up. Newsom wants to continue allowing at least 50% of our water to flow out to sea.
Bill - perhaps it has escaped you that our federal taxation for most of us has decreased or will decrease thanks to the Big Beautiful Bill. All of the taxes and charges that you mention are authorized by lame voters at the State and local level. That is where you should direct your displeasure and carefully look at the next song and dance by the County and the State for more bond issues and further waste.
