Editor,
This letter may not change any minds, and many have probably already voted in this year’s “voting season,” but possibly I can educate a few on what they just voted for by helping pass Proposition 50.
Editor,
This letter may not change any minds, and many have probably already voted in this year’s “voting season,” but possibly I can educate a few on what they just voted for by helping pass Proposition 50.
In order to combat President Trump — who many deeply hate — this proposition’s solution is to further alienate 40% of California voters who may (or may not) like Trump, but enjoy the direction this country is now headed: who already have to deal with living in a one-party state (whose unbalance is sending it into an unaffordable tailspin). Now their voices are to be further beaten down in their representation in D.C.
Part of what is sad about this is how this “temporary” measure will become permanent, as they always do. (Ever know of someone willingly give up power or money?) For reference, see your “temporary” gas tax, registration fees and other “emergency allocations” of funds, that never go away. The nonpartisan commission was set up that way for a reason. God forbid those trying to stop the other party be on the losing end next time. Fair is fair, but to some, it is sometimes necessary to upend democracy to save democracy. Sounds more like you just want to make sure you always get your way, like a spoiled child. Pretty soon, you end up with no friends left.

“Fair is fair, but to some, it is sometimes necessary to upend democracy to save democracy.” Uh, isn’t voting the hallmark of democracy? And with a president posting cartoon memes of dumping sh*t on his constituents, the accusation of petty behavior…
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Welch. A spoiled child’s characteristics are a perfect description of Newsom. I’d also add that Newsom has a big issue with jealousy – of President Trump. Newsom is no President Trump, not even close, so Newsom throws temper tantrums to get his way. Pretty soon, Newsom will have no friends. Unless you need a favor. Wink-wink.
The Nextdoor site is officially non-political but based on some allowed postings it clearly shows partiality. Most in favor Prop50 and seem to have a sense of achievement by voting for this destructive, undemocratic measure. Do they really understand that they are disenfranchising millions of Californians if the proposition passes? Is it, as Howard mentions, that their TDS overrules the the democratic values that they, and slick Newsom, are so fond of throwing around? Yes, they are like petulant kids who did not like the ice cream flavor of the day. Heaven help us as we slide further into oblivion.
