Today, I am afraid that we are under assault by those that have been elected to govern us. Examples of an overburdening and punitive state and local government are so plentiful, I can only mention the ones that I feel are the most onerous. First, two unaccountable and unelected regional agencies, the ABAG and MTC have given birth to another regional monster by the name of CASA.
This little new agency will have the ability to actually tax you and tell you what must be built in your city. Keep in mind, you did not have the ability to vote for any of these people. Secondly, SCA 5 — this amendment to our state Constitution will lower the threshold it takes to pass school parcel taxes from a two-thirds majority to 55 percent.
State Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, and Assemblymen Marc Berman, D-Palo Alto, and Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, want to change the Constitution to make it easier for school districts to pass taxes on property owners.
Lastly, I don’t know what is wrong with state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco, these two guys just can’t take no for an answer. California voters resoundingly rejected rent control this past election and yet like zombies, they keep coming back with more legislation to control private property in our state.
I consider myself more than anything a taxpayer advocate and feel that taxpayers are getting abused by our state and local officials. They continue proposing new taxes at an ever-alarming rate and at the same time increasing the number of institutions that have the ability to tax you.

Just for the record:
In terms of real dollars, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s $12.5 billion hike in early 2009 was the biggest, sure, but in terms of percentage of general fund, none beats Reagan’s, as Los Angeles Times columnist George Skelton pointed out back in July. “[T]he all-time champ is Reagan,” he wrote. “His tax increase equaled roughly 30 percent of the general fund. [Pete] Wilson’s was 16 percent; Schwarzenegger’s 14 percent.”
