As a staff member at Hillsdale School who knows several of the students attending the school personally, the loss of one of these young people has deeply affected me.
I prepared myself to serve these students, but never to receive the news of one of them passing away.
And knowing that the other is in critical condition brings profound pain.
I cannot imagine the parents’ grief.
My community work has given me the chance to get to know parents better, and the terror shared by us all is the loss of one of our children.

What are the right words to help heal the parents’ pain? What words should be used for their classmates and friends?
There are no “right” words for when a parent loses a child, but there is unconditional support.
I send a heartfelt embrace to my entire San Mateo community.
