Editor,
Recently the Office of State Attorney General Rob Bonta chose not to pursue an investigation of San Mateo County Sheriff Carlos Bolanos. The AG said it did not find any criminal corruption of powers behavior.
It is worth noting that AG Bonta endorsed Carlos Bolanos in his losing campaign for sheriff this year. Bonta’s Special Assistant AG who reviewed the case, Mike Redding, previously worked for San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Wagstaffe frequently appeared at campaign events with Sheriff Bolanos, and they both donated to each other’s campaign. Bolanos has hired a defense attorney and asked the county to pay
$25,000 for his legal costs.
The county’s Board of Supervisors has hired a retired judge to conduct an independent investigation into the handling of the raid on an Indiana carmaker by county deputies, costing taxpayers over $10,000. The board’s investigation is costing taxpayers another $75,000, all due to Bolanos misbehavior. This past June, 57% of county voters chose a new sheriff they can trust. The current sheriff does not care about the department’s future. The Board of Supervisors must commit to supporting the sheriff-elect by protecting the department’s funds from misuse, to ensure sufficient funding for the new Sheriff’s Office.

LTE is loaded with guilt by association. Is there a conspiracy at work?
Mr Newell, Thank you for raising this. The outgoing Sheriff is gleefully continuing his pattern of doing favors for friends at individual citizens and taxpayers' expense. I am so thankful his time is limited, but is there no way to show him the door now and save us the money and 3 more months of corruption? In addition to the Batmobile, there is the recent revelation that Sheriff personnel were reading communications between jail inmates and their attorneys and passing the info to the DA--a clear civil rights violation.
