Anti-abortion activists will have multiple reasons to celebrate — and some reasons for unease — when they gather Friday in Washington for the annual March for Life. The march has been held since January 1974 — a year after the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision established a nationwide right to abortion. This year's gathering will be the first since the high court struck down Roe in a momentous ruling last June. Since then, 12 Republican-governed states have implemented sweeping bans on abortion. But in the same period, abortion opponents were defeated in votes on ballot measures in Kansas, Michigan and Kentucky. And state courts have blocked several abortion bans from taking effect.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told political leaders at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, that supplies of Western weapons must come quicker than Russia's attacks. Zelenskyy, speaking by video link from Kyiv, is urging the world to move faster in its decision-making because "tragedies are outpacing life; the tyranny is outpacing democracy." He spoke Wednesday after U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the world as being in a "sorry state" because of interlinked challenges including climate change and Russia's war in Ukraine. The gloomy messages came on the second day of the elite gathering of world leaders and corporate executives in the Swiss ski resort of Davos.
By temperament and manner, Joe Biden and Mitch McConnell are decidedly mismatched. But with the days of politically divided government under Biden underway, their long relationship will become even more important. The Senate Republican leader's experience in cutting deals and the political capital he retains among his members could leave him much freer to negotiate thorny matters with the White House. Both men also see political imperatives in strategically cooperating. When asked about his relationship with McConnell earlier this month, Biden said: "We've always been able to work together."

The U.S. and Japan are ready to seal an agreement to bolster their cooperation on space. It's the latest in a series of moves by Japan as it looks to build security cooperation with allies in a time of provocative Chinese and North Korean military action. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held wide-ranging talks at the White House on Friday. Later Friday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa will sign a U.S.-Japan Space Cooperation agreement. Kishida's Washington visit is the capstone on a weeklong tour of five European and North American capitals.
