I appreciated the article by Matt Callahan on hybrids ("Demand rising for hybrids as gas prices soar" in the Oct. 25 edition of the Daily Journal). Back in '73, when gas was less than a quarter of what it is now, a very similar phenomenon erupted; the interest in smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient vehicles. They were known as "econoboxes," and were of either Japanese or German manufacture. They had been a joke before '73 - then the laughter subsided somewhat.
There was a rush to get hold of them, as there is for - surprise - the Prius and other hybrids. Honda makes one. Predictably, the Ford hybrid isn't up to the foreign car standards. Detroit lags.
How short our memories are!
We've had 31 years to come up with an energy policy in this country! The whole time, we've been complaining about OPEC - and buying the Hummers! Wake up folks!
