Among the dozens of executive orders and a hundred executive actions Trump signed on Day 1, there is an order challenging the granting of American citizenship to all who are born within the borders of the United States. Presumably, these infants now would have to go through the naturalization process to become citizens, or really they would have to prove the clause in the 14th Amendment “and subject to the jurisdiction thereof,” in addition to having a birth certificate, to become U.S. citizens.
This means an infant has parents who have established residency within the United States, among a few other cases. Foreign nationals, namely diplomats, currently don’t get American citizenship for their babies born here because of this clause, and Trump wants to expand that policy to exclude babies born from undocumented migrants. Chain migration, or pathway to citizenship for migrants through their American citizen children, is the target of Trump’s efforts.
As they say on conservative radio, “folks, Donald Trump is serious about securing our borders.” From Day 1 the intention of the Trump Administration is crystal clear. He wants to remove the motivation for migrants to come to this country illegally. At the same time, Trump is going to deport millions of undocumented migrants and finish building that wall he started eight years ago. He’s not playing around and he’s not talking out of the side of his mouth.
We like a politician who is earnest and straightforward. Contrast Trump with Gavin Newsom who says government should be leaner and more efficient but who has increased the size of California government by hundreds of thousands of employees. Newsom is a cool slick liar, a typical Democrat.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Constantino, and the reminder that Trump is serious about securing our borders. Trump is off to a good start and I would recommend American citizens do their civic duty and report suspected invaders to ICE. As for the order challenging “anchor” babies, there’s no harm in trying. If Trump were Biden, I imagine Trump could just ignore an Amendment and carry on.
