As a high school student and a young resident of Foster City, I am incredibly grateful to live in a community that values outdoor spaces. From the beautiful views along the San Francisco Bay Trail to the paths connecting our neighborhoods and lagoons, our city is uniquely built for walking, running and biking. However, as more students and families rely on bicycles and especially e-bikes to commute to school, parks and shopping centers, it is becoming increasingly important that we focus on path safety and infrastructure. While our current trail system is fantastic, there are several key intersections and high-traffic areas where bike lanes feel disconnected, forcing cyclists onto busy main roads alongside vehicle traffic.
By investing in clearer lane markings, better signs and community education programs regarding trail etiquette between pedestrians and cyclists, Foster City/San Mateo can set a great example for the rest of the Bay Area. Keeping our paths safe not only protects residents but also encourages more people to choose eco-friendly ways to get around town.
I hope our city leaders and community members will continue to work together to ensure that Foster City and San Mateo remain a safe, accessible and beautiful place to ride for years to come.
