Nancy, age 80, of San Carlos, California died on April 22, 2026.
Nancy was born on August 31, 1945 in Anderson, South Carolina, graduated from Brentwood High School in St. Louis, Missouri, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English at Cornell College in Iowa. She then earned her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, DeWitt Boyd Stone, Sr. and Suzanne Lander Stone and survived by her husband, David Crabbe, brother DeWitt Stone, Jr., (wife Carolyn), sister Jane Stone, 6 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews, who live in South Carolina, Virginia, and Arizona.
Nancy moved to Boston in 1967 after graduation from Cornell where she taught middle school for one year before pursuing her graduate degree at Simmons. While in Boston, she met her husband David whom she married in 1968. After her graduation from Simmons, they piled everything they owned into a Volkswagen Mini-bus and moved to San Francisco, where Nancy began her library career with the San Mateo County Library System. She eventually moved on to Redwood City Library first as Assistant Librarian and later as City Librarian for the City of San Mateo. After a few years, she went to work for the Santa Clara Library System.
Nancy was active with several non- profit organizations throughout her life. In 1985, she joined the anti-war group Beyond War in response to the threat of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Beyond War disbanded. So in 1992, she, along with seven other former Beyond War volunteers founded the non-profit Sustainable San Mateo County which was established to build awareness of the need for sustainability in the county before the concept of sustainability was widely accepted. In 2006, Nancy joined the Sjogrens Foundation and worked as a small support group facilitator. Nancy was a kind, caring person and a loving wife.
Donations to: The Sjogrens Foundation, San Mateo County and City Libraries, Santa Clara Library System, Sustainable San Mateo County. There will be a private memorial service to be announced later.
