Helen Marie Phipps, of San Bruno, died peacefully at home Nov. 8, 2009 after a courageous recovery from a stroke. She was 89. Phipps is predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Phipps Jr., son James Phipps and sister, Jean Sullivan.
She is survived by her children Rosemary Pfeiffer and her partner, Karen Largent; Jeanne Rogers and her husband, Rick; Patricia Grube; Tom Phipps; Tess Camilleri and her husband, Al; Joanne Acton and her husband, Doug; Louise Burke and her husband, Shaun; and Dan Phipps and his wife, Cathy.
She is also survived by her grandchildren Ian Pfeiffer, Chris and Jennifer Rogers, Shannon and Jesse Grube, Nikki Phipps Harrington, J.T. and Tara Phipps, Kelly and Casey Camilleri and Laura and Shane Action. She was also the cherished great-grandmother of five and sister to William Sullivan.
Phipps, a native of Buffalo, N.Y. graduate from Loretto Academy in Niagara Falls, Ontario and the College of San Mateo nursing program. She retired after a career in nursing at Peninsula Blood Bank and Seton Medical Center and volunteered at both Samaritan House and the St. Vincent de Paul Society in South San Francisco.
Phipps loved music and all things French. She played both the organ and the piano and loved her garden, her home, her female friends and her family.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 and vigil at 5 p.m., both at Chapel of the Highlands, 194 Millwood Drive at El Camino Real in Millbrae. The funeral will leave the chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 and proceed to a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Robert’s Catholic Church, Crystal Springs Avenue at Oak in San Bruno.
Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Samaritan House, 1511 S. Claremont St., San Mateo, 94402 or the Catholic Worker Hospitality House, 672 Second Ave., San Bruno, 94066.
