A Banning man who died after being stung more than 100 times was not attacked by killer bees.
DNA tests revealed the bees that attacked Don Algiers on Sept. 26 were Egyptian rather than Africanized honeybees, state Department of Food and Agriculture officials said Friday.
The bees were initially thought to be Africanized because of their aggressive behavior.
Egyptian bees are commonly found in the California desert and are thought to be less aggressive than Africanized bees.
"Egyptian bees don't typically give you a much harder time than European honeybees," said Eric Mussen, a University of California Cooperative Extension bee expert.
Algiers, a heavy equipment operator, was allergic to bee venom, said his brother, Randy Algiers. He was attacked after dropping a load of rocks and dirt on a culvert colonized by the bees and died shortly afterward.<
