In Madison, Wis. the rabbits feeding on rare imported rose bushes at the city's Olbrich Gardens have won a reprieve from death row - at least for now. Mayor Sue Bauman won't support the plan approved last week by the Parks Commission to let employees start shooting them, spokesman Ryan Mulcahy said.
"We're not taking a public position now, but we're not supporting the concept of shooting rabbits as the answer," Mulcahy said Tuesday. "There must be other alternatives."
The commission voted to let employees at the gardens take up pellet guns against the rabbits because they have been destroying acres of plant life.
City Council President Dorothy Borchardt, who also serves on the Parks Commission, said the shooting should be allowed as a temporary measure until a better solution is found.
"I wish she'd sign on and then we could look for other ways to dispose of them," Borchardt said.
