DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. military leaders said a ceasefire is still in effect a day after Iran was blamed for new attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and against the United Arab Emirates, a key American ally that later said it came under Iranian drone and missile attack again Tuesday.

Still, the fragile truce reached nearly a month ago appeared to be holding as U.S. forces pressed ahead with efforts to reopen the strait, a vital waterway for global energy. On Monday, the U.S. said it had opened a lane and sunk six small Iranian boats that had threatened commercial ships.

The U.S. military says it fired on Iranian forces and sank six small boats as it moved to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran claimed to have struck a U.S. Navy vessel near the strait, claims the U.S. denied. The claims all took place as U.S. President Donald Trump said it had reopened a lane through the strait in an effort he called "Project Freedom."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the shaky U.S.-Iran ceasefire remains intact despite recent Iranian strikes. Officials say the attacks fall short of “major combat operations,” and the U.S. is "locked, loaded" and prepared to respond if Iran escalates.
