Some traits run in families - for the Gadson brothers, that trait appears to be on the receiving end of violent crimes.
Tyrone Gadson was shot in the abdomen Feb. 11 while walking in North Central San Mateo. Police arrested two suspects and both have pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
Last October, Gadson's brother Sean Gadson was stabbed in San Mateo, reportedly by a man with whom he has a history of violent assault. After the attack, Sean Gadson was arrested himself on an unrelated robbery charge.
Tyrone Gadson was scheduled for a parole violation hearing yesterday, too.
While there is no reason to believe the two crimes are related, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said it is odd to see cases so entwined at the same time.
John Tonga, 19, pleaded not guilty yesterday to trying to kill Tyrone Gadson. The plea comes one day after his alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Jared Fonua, did the same.
Both men are accused of the shooting in the 100 block of Grant Street. Police were called to the scene at approximately 11 p.m. Feb. 11 when shots were reported. Several bullet casings were found on the ground and the victim was found around the corner. He had been shot in the back and the bullet exited his stomach.

According to investigators, the victim was walking by Fonua's residence at 107 Grant St. when the suspects confronted him. They asked why he was in the neighborhood and the victim ran. Fonua reportedly handed a .40 caliber handgun to Tonga who chased the victim down and shot him.
The men return to court March 19 for a preliminary hearing - the same day Sean Gadson returns to court for a probation report and sentencing in the robbery case.
Sean Gadson, 37, was found guilty of robbing a 17-year-old boy in the 400 block of Georgetown Street with two accomplices May 9. The trio allegedly beat and choked the victim before stealing his wallet and cell phone.
On Oct. 21, Sean Gadson was walking down Cary Avenue in San Mateo when 25-year-old Jose Granados allegedly stabbed him.
Sean Gadson has two prior armed robbery convictions in 1993 and 1996 that could send him back to prison for life if they are admitted as criminal strikes during sentencing.
Sean Gadson remains in custody in lieu of $300,000 bail. Fonua and Tonga are in custody on no-bail status.
