Former U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier is likely to be San Mateo County’s new District 1 supervisor according to early returns on election night but results were not as clear for District 4.
With just under 50% of the vote for the District 4 position, East Palo Alto Councilmember Lisa Gauthier currently leads the race with East Palo Alto Mayor Antonio López in second.
Supervisor David Canepa ran uncontested for reelection in District 5.
Gauthier, who was endorsed by current Board of Supervisors President Warren Slocum, received 49.64% of the preliminary votes, or 5,018 total votes, while López received 22.46% or 2,270 total in his favor, according to semiofficial results from the San Mateo County Elections Office. López has been endorsed by U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna, Sen. Aisha Wahab and supervisors Canepa and Corzo.
Results gathered over the next few weeks will ultimately determine if there will be a runoff for the District 4 position — which covers most of Redwood City, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park and North Fair Oaks — in the general election this November. In supervisor races, anyone receiving 50% or more in the primary will win the seat without the need to compete in the general election.
On the other hand, Speier appeared to be the clear winner over Millbrae Councilmember Ann Schneider, earning 69.48% of the vote or 10,305 total votes. She will likely replace Dave Pine for District 1, an area covering all or most of Burlingame, Hillsborough, Millbrae, San Bruno and South San Francisco.
“I made it clear I was coming home to make good trouble,” Speier said previously. “This is it. I want to continue to do this thing I love.”
She was endorsed by Pine; U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto; state Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park; and Assemblymember Marc Berman, D-Palo Alto.
The candidates who remain the victor in their respective races will be sworn in January 2025 and will serve alongside Noelia Corzo in District 2, Ray Mueller in District 3 and Canepa in District 5.
Corzo and Mueller will be up for reelection in 2026.
All results are according to semiofficial results from Tuesday, March 5, which included vote by mail ballots received on or by Friday, March 1, and some in-person voting centers. As of 10 p.m. 82,836 ballots have been counted.
The post-election day results will be released before 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7; Monday, March 11; Wednesday, March 13; Friday, March 15; Monday, March 18; Wednesday, March 20; and Friday, March 22. Other updates will be added if necessary. Results will be certified April 4.
