The shutdown of a Burlingame elementary school remains on the horizon as the district continues to weigh the benefits of such a move, regardless of whether a parcel tax is passed in June.
Closing one of the district's five elementary schools could end up saving the district $250,000 a year in desperately needed funds that could be re-channeled to other programs. The shutdown would mean the elimination of several salaried positions, including a principal, secretary and custodial staff. Teachers would not be affected since they would be assigned to the remaining four schools.
The district is counting on the passage of a $76 parcel tax to help keep all five schools alive for another year. But even if the measure doesn't pass muster with voters June 3, the schools will remain open for the 2003-2004 academic year, according to board Trustee Marc Friedman.
