Melissa Moreno, current interim chancellor of San Mateo County Community College District, was unanimously named for the permanent position by the Board of Trustees after a multiyear search.
Moreno was one of four finalist candidates vying for the position. She was previously president of Skyline College in San Bruno from August 2020 to March 2023.
Prior to her time at Skyline College, Moreno served as dean of education programs, an adjunct faculty and vice president of the School of Extended Learning at Santa Barbara City College for more than 13 years. She holds a bachelor’s in cultural anthropology University of California, Santa Barbara, and a doctorate from Santa Barbara College of Law.
The search for a new chancellor was prompted by the retirement of Michael Claire who left the role in June 2023. Claire was hired as the replacement for former Chancellor Ron Galatolo, who was arrested in April 2022 for the misuse of public funds.
Galatolo suddenly announced he was stepping down from the chancellor position in 2019 and would become “chancellor emeritus” in August 2019 for $467,700 a year. It later came out that he was under criminal investigation and was ultimately fired from emeritus status in 2021. He is currently facing 23 felony charges but denies them. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 17.
The search for a permanent replacement was long drawn out. The district board had a group of three finalists in February 2023 but after one publicly declared he would not seek the position, the two others also pulled out.
Moreno will begin her term as chancellor with an anticipated start date of April 25. The board will consider the full employment agreement, including salary and benefit provisions at its April 24 regular meeting.
Congratulations to Dr. Moreno on her selection to the permanent Chancellor position at SMCCD. As a frequent critic of the previous administrations, I have welcomed the noticeable improvements to transparency and accountability that Dr. Moreno has made during her short tenure as Interim Chancellor. And thank you to the Board of Trustees for choosing a candidate who has shown she can implement their laudable efforts to change and open the closed culture of previous administrations.
