Lisa Biasillo is the new executive director at the helm of Redwood City’s Marine Science Institute, an environmental and experiential nonprofit educating the Peninsula’s children and families.
Since the Marine Science Institute was founded in 1970, Biasillo is only the fourth executive director, an honor she takes seriously.
“They’ve been unwavering in their mission and commitment in getting kids to experience the Bay, to get their hands in the water, to feel connected to it,” Biasillo said. “I want to focus on how to protect the integrity of how we do that and increase opportunities for more kids.”
Many may know the Marine Science Institute through a common elementary school field trip where students take a “mud pledge” to protect the environment. Others may have attended summer programs or taken a class on ecology.
Providing young kids with a hands-on and tactile experience that is up close and personal with the San Francisco Bay is the goal of the institute, Biasillo said. Meaningful environmental stewardship begins with that direct experience, she said.
“Kids are feeling more disconnected with the natural world because of the rise of technology and when you factor in all the impacts on our ecosystem,” Biasillo said. “These things prevent kids from feeling connected, that they belong there and that they should care about it.”
As kids stand on the edge of the Bay, touch sea creatures, put mud on their nose, they begin to develop a genuine wonder which leads to caring for the environment, she said.
“When you’re young and you have these transformative experiences, that forms your environmental identity,” Biasillo said. “It influences you as an adult and how you choose to spend time in nature.”

In her new role, Biasillo will work to raise money for the institute, keep programs vibrant and expand access to more and more kids.
“I’m eager to work alongside the staff, board, volunteers and community partners to deepen MSI’s impact, strengthen its financial sustainability and ensure that future generations grow up knowing, loving and protecting the remarkable ecosystems right at their doorstep,” Biasillo said.
Biasillo comes to the Marine Science Institute with vast experience working in educational roles and appreciation for the impact it can have on young lives.
Biasillo was previously the vice president of Education at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, where she led educational programs across the zoo and conservation science research center. She also worked at international schools in Austria, Rwanda and Cambodia.
The Marine Science Institute is located at the Port of Redwood City. Visit sfbaymsi.org for more information on its educational programs.
Biasillo recommends residents make the effort to go outside and take advantage of the Bay Area’s natural amenities.
“Somehow, get out and be on the Bay, even if it’s not with us,” she said.
MSI is a terrific organization, and a lot of credit should go to Marilou Seiff, who has been at the helm (literally, they have a boat) for over 20 years now.
