In anticipation of its 50th anniversary this year, the congregation of Peninsula Temple Beth-El in San Mateo went to great lengths to spruce up its place of worship.
The renovation included a meditation room with rainbow-colored glass, plus a 40-foot sacred calender depicting important events and Torah passages of the Jewish year. The sanctuary brightened with the installation of windows and skylights. The ark was redesigned, and new pews were added. Fire sprinklers, a sound system, air conditioning, plus innovations making the sanctuary more accessible for the disabled were also positioned. The congregation sought to modernize the temple in anticipation of the future while retaining its integrity in honoring the past.
In characterizing the community which he has led for more than 50 years, Rabbi Emeritus Sanford Rosen said,
