Responding to pressure applied by community members and local lawmakers, the Peninsula Health Care District plans to build affordable housing in its proposed wellness community, according to a top district official.

District board of directors Chair Lawrence Cappel said development teams are crafting a vision for building “a significant amount” of affordable housing in the project abutting the Mills-Peninsula Medical Center.

There is no excuse to build any luxury housing on this public land. It is unacceptable. The only proper use is 100 percent affordable housing.

Who will be eligible for this subsidized housing? I think a public notification of rules and eligibility would be beneficial and appropriate. We should have as many participants in our community apply for this wonderful opportunity. Now that we are using this resource for public good, who are the ones who will benefit from the largesse and who is negotiating on the tax payers behalf?

For once, I agree with Mr. Conway. Why are the details being withheld from the public. Why did PHCD vote earlier this year against recording its meetings after seeing so many members of the public showing interest?
