Emma Gonzalez was appointed interim San Mateo County Parks director, filling the role left vacant after Nicholas Calderon was made deputy county executive as one of numerous recent internal county promotions.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with park staff in continuing to provide the exceptional park services and programs the public relies upon,” Gonzalez said in a press release.
Gonzalez noted that improvements to San Bruno Mountain State and County Park and the new Flood Park playground in Menlo Park are both capital projects scheduled for completion in 2026.
Gonzalez was formally the chief and director of Community Affairs and Programming, working under County Executive Mike Callagy’s office.
Callagy commended Gonzalez for delivering on key initiatives and building strong partnerships in her former role.

“Emma brings deep experience in public service, community engagement, and cross-departmental leadership,” Callagy said in the release. “I’m confident she will continue advancing the Parks Department’s important work in service to our communities.”
San Mateo County Parks manages and preserves public lands by keeping up the county’s parks, trails and historic sites. The county takes care of more than 16,000 acres of public properties that reflect the region’s natural habitat. Parks ranged from tide pools and forests to remote shoreline campsites and playgrounds.
The title change for Gonzalez follows many made before the end of 2025 as well.
Calderon was promoted to deputy county executive along with Rocio Kiryczun, who was formerly the county’s Human Resources director. The two replace former deputy county executives Justin Mates and Adam Ely, who were both promoted as assistant county executives effective Jan. 4. Their promotion followed the retirement of former Assistant County Executive Iliana Rodriguez, effective Dec. 31, 2025.
