Two more Basecamp Fitness locations are landing in San Mateo County, joining the founding Burlingame location in offering group exercise classes with a recently-opened location in San Mateo and a Millbrae club set to open doors by the fall.
Brett Livingstone, franchise owner for the two new locations, said he’s looking at the community-minded principles of Burlingame’s Basecamp Fitness club — originally conceptualized in 2013 by Zappos.com founder Nick Swinmurn — as inspiration.
“The Basecamp Burlingame club is incredibly engaging,” he said. “It’s a vibrant, busy club with quarterly thank you meetings, they do a lot of stuff in the community. It’s a great legacy for me to work from … we’re gonna duplicate some of that, certainly.”
The boutique fitness studios have expanded across the country since its inception on the Peninsula, with 22 locations nationwide and an international expansion under the SUMHIIT Fitness label ongoing.
But the exercise club maintains strong ties to its California beginnings, Basecamp Fitness President Ben Camper said.
“California is really where the roots of the brand began,” he said. “It’s a really health-conscious consumer in California. They really value health and wellness and how it relates to their daily lives. So it’s beyond just a workout.”
The Basecamp workout consists of a high-intensity, 35-minute workout and 10-minute cooldown that rotates between bike-based cardio and strength training. It’s designed to eliminate the common reasons people give up on working out, Livingstone said.

“We like to think we kind of solve three basic problems people have with fitness: I don’t have enough time, I don’t know what to do, and I need some motivation,” he said.
In a market that can feel saturated with workout class options, Basecamp’s commitment to building community stands out, Livingstone said.
“A 25-pound weight is a 25-pound weight, anywhere on the planet,” he said. “The staff is so darn engaging they love the concept and that has become infectious.”
Workouts are also designed to create a sense of team-building.
“What’s really sticky about ours, not only the results that number is achieved, but how they get there, through the communities we develop,” Camper said. “Each class, a member is sharing the bike with another member. Through that dynamic, because members are paired up on the bike together, there’s this as member to member accountability that, we do this together.”
