A mom and her two sons in a Prius were heading north Thursday night on Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo through a green light when the driver of a Ford SUV ran a red light from the eastbound State Route 92 off-ramp and collided with the car, killing the mother and sending the two boys to the hospital in stable but critical condition, according to police.
At about 6:17 p.m., San Mateo police, along with the California Highway Patrol responded to the collision and found the two vehicles. The driver of the Prius, a 30-year-old woman identified by the Coroner’s Office as Yina Marcela Ramos Bello, of South San Francisco, was pronounced dead at the scene and her two young children, boys aged 5 and 7, were taken to the hospital. The male driver of the Ford was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, according to police.
The intersection was shut down for four hours Thursday while police investigated the collision. Police are currently working to determine why the driver of the Ford failed to stop for the red light, but he was not driving impaired. His identity is being withheld.
“Our investigation continues as we send our condolences to the family as they process this tragedy. We have offered support via our Chaplain and Peer Support programs, as well as through our Youth Services Unit/PAL,” according to a police press release.
I cross that intersection, which has quite prominent traffic lights, several times a week. Another report mentioned that the driver is a 70 year old male and was not arrested. Strange is that the police immediately discounted the effect of intoxication. How, pray tell me? This guy was either not paying attention or is color blind. The least the DMV can do is suspend his license until a final police report is submitted. Just think of the poor guy with two children in the hospital and the loss of his wife. So tragic!
