The family of a mother who died in a San Mateo collision last week is now raising money to cover the costs of the funeral, ongoing medical bills for her children and expenses to return the mother to Colombia.
On July 31, Yina Marcela Ramos Bello, 30, died in a car crash after a Ford SUV ran a red light and struck her Prius. Her two children Mathias, 6, and Mateo, 5, were also in the car and were hospitalized in stable but critical condition, as of Monday.
Ramos Bello’s husband, Alejandro Londoño Rojas, is “now facing an unimaginable reality grieving the loss of his wife while caring for his injured children and managing the overwhelming financial burden left behind,” the GoFundMe page reads.
“In the so-called ‘Land of Opportunity,’ how can everything be taken from someone in an instant?” the family said, according to the GoFundMe page. “This could be any one of us. No family should have to bear financial hardship while navigating such profound grief.”
As of Monday evening, approximately 65% of the $50,000 goal was raised.
The money will support covering the costs of the funeral, memorial and repatriation expenses to return Ramos Bello to her homeland. It will also cover ongoing medical bills, loss of income as Londoño Rojas cares for his sons, and everyday living expenses, according to the GoFundMe page.
“Your compassion and generosity will help Alejandro and his boys focus on healing instead of survival,” the GoFundMe post reads.
The San Mateo Police Department is still investigating as to whether they will be filing charges against the driver of the SUV. KTVU reported Saturday that the driver said his brakes failed.
The collision took place at about 6:17 p.m. when the driver ran the red light from the eastbound State Route 92 off-ramp and hit the Prius heading north on Alameda de las Pulgas. The driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and the intersection was closed for four hours while police conducted their investigation.
This was the second fatal collision in San Mateo this year. The first was a pedestrian, Mark Kremer, 56, who was struck and killed by a vehicle in February.

Why isn't the drivers name being released? How could police already determine speed and/or drugs/alcohol already were not a factor? A crime was definitely committed here. I would say it should be an involuntary manslaughter charge at the lightest. The perpetrator needs to be identified. But he is probably the right protected class - like Cesar Morales proved - you can kill somebody with you car while driving recklessly in San Mateo County and nothing is going to happen to you. I prepare for battle every time I get on our San Mateo County roadways. People drive crazy and the laws we have in place do not protect us anymore.
So, the driver claimed that his brakes failed. We have heard that before. It is still a crime and devastating for that young family. And why, hasn't he been charged. And, who is he? If you or I had caused this, our names and pictures would have been on the front page.
The victim's name is always released very quickly, only the killer deserves 'Privacy'.
This reminds me of US Bicycle Champion Ethan Boyes or 49ers Coach Greg Knapp, where both killers were driving drunk or distracted and basically got off the hook easily. It took months before the killer's names came out.
