A man who allegedly imprisoned and raped an elderly friend of his mother’s in a Belmont hotel has been charged with 19 additional sexual assault felonies, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Ian Kroe, 55, of Oakland, was originally charged with 14 felonies, including elder abuse, elder theft and false imprisonment. New charges of rape, sodomy and oral copulation bring the total to 33 charges, Wagstaffe said.
The new charges are based on testimony from the victim at Kroe’s preliminary hearing, Wagstaffe said.
Kroe allegedly struck up a friendship with the victim — a lifetime friend of his mother — moving from Minnesota to be closer to her after his mother’s death and allegedly draining her accounts, virtually imprisoning her in the Belmont Hyatt Hotel for over a year and raping her numerous times.
In August 2022, after contacting a friend in New Mexico, the police located the victim in severe medical distress at the Hyatt Hotel.
Kroe’s pretrial hearing is set for Sept. 7 and jury trial is set to begin Oct. 11.
