A jail inmate who allegedly tried to escape from a substance abuse treatment facility in San Mateo last week pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony escaping and resisting arrest, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Salvador Aguirre, 47, is a registered sex offender who has been serving time in a Santa Cruz County jail for a probation violation.
His probation officer brought him to a drug treatment center at Second Avenue and South Claremont Street on Friday to interview for admission to the program, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Aguirre’s probation officer left him with the center staff while he got lunch. When Aguirre went to the restroom, he allegedly climbed out a window and escaped, still in his orange/tan jail jumpsuit.
The probation officer notified San Mateo police and after an extensive search he allegedly was seen at the Hayward Street Caltrain station. He allegedly tried to elude officers but was caught after a short chase, prosecutors said.
Aguirre remains in custody without bail. He is set to return to court on March 13.
