A 38-foot sloop ran aground Monday near the north side of the Highway 92 bridge in Foster City after its diabetic captain passed out at the helm.
Mark Bosta, 48, launched his boat in Brisbane for a day sail in the foggy and windless San Francisco Bay Monday morning, taking insulin for his diabetes at about 8 a.m.
Through the morning his blood sugar dropped and he fell unconcious while sailing on autopilot. The white Catalina sloop ran into mud about 15 feet from the rocky shore near a large office building at 4000 East Third Ave. Police and firefighters were called for a boat in distress at 12:33 p.m.
Foster City Fire Department medics climbed aboard the bow with a ladder and revived Bosta, said Stan Maupin, Batallion Chief of the Foster City Fire Department. Firefighters launched a dingy to take him off the yacht at about 1:05 p.m., while a crowd of about 15 onlookers watched from shore.
Describing his loss of blood sugar, Bosta said, "I didn't feel anything, it just kind of happened."

He has had diabetes for 10 years, he said.
The Brisbane resident was treated by paramedics and given orange juice and a nutrition bar. Released at about 2:30 p.m., Bosta was left to deal with his boat, which was stuck in the mud with a dropping tide.
As rescuers tied the vessel ashore, Bosta said there would be minimal damage and that it would have to be towed out at high tide.
