A Belmont man was charged with one count of felony threats against a Maronite church in Millbrae, San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Shin-Mee Chang said.
Alexi El Kadi, 50, was taken into custody about 8:40 a.m. Friday and is currently being held on a $25,000 bail.
The Sheriff’s Office said a social media post indicated a “potential attack” was planned at mass on Sunday at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church in the 600 block of El Camino Real in Millbrae. Deputies were told there was a history of harassment toward an organizer at the church, “resulting in sustained fear and concern for attendee safety,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
El Kadi has a preliminary hearing Sept. 12.
