The Alzheimer's Association says the Bay Area is scheduled to host a number of discussions and forums about Alzheimer's disease leading up to November, which is National Alzheimer's Disease Month.
President Ronald Reagan, who suffers from the disease, signed legislation into law in 1983 to establish the national month and spur funding for a cure. Later that same year Congress allocated $22 million to search for a cure and, since then, research funding has increased to its current level of nearly $600 million.
The association says 14 million people in the United States will have the disease by 2040, which translates into about 315,000 in the Bay Area.
