A June carjacking in San Mateo led to a multimonth investigation that landed two men in custody with the help of the California National Guard.
At about 4:56 a.m. June 8, San Mateo police were called to the 700 block of South Humboldt Street on the report of a stolen car. The victim said they were walking away from their parked, idling vehicle when a man stepped out of another vehicle that just approached and got in the victim’s car. The victim tried to pull the man out of the seat but he took out a knife and lunged. The suspect then drove away in the victim’s vehicle. The suspect vehicle also fled the scene, according to police.
The San Mateo Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau assumed the case and, after a multimonth investigation, Okustino Tao, 25, of Oakland, was identified as the primary suspect, while Tevita Salt, 22, of Oakland, was identified as the driver of the suspect vehicle. Tao was already in custody for other unrelated charges, and the crimes of carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon were added to his booking sheet. At the request of the San Mateo Police Department, and after the authoring of numerous search warrants related to this investigation, members of the California National Guard assisted in locating Salt, who was still outstanding, according to police.
Salt was located in his vehicle in Oakland and arrested Oct. 15, according to police.
