A Caltrans graphic shows a planned closure of eastbound lanes on Interstate 80 in San Francisco and the detour routes available for motorists. The closure starts at 11 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday.
A planned 55-hour closure of eastbound lanes on Interstate Highway 80 in San Francisco between 17th and Fourth streets will start Friday and last through the weekend, with the expectation that it will cause major travel delays for drivers.
Critical maintenance work along a 1.6-mile stretch of I-80 starting at 11 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday will address regular wear-and-tear from the millions of cars that make use of one of San Francisco’s busiest freeways.
Motorists’ last eastbound I-80 exits will be Vermont Street and Ninth Street, where they will then be redirected through Bryant Street in the South of Market neighborhood. The interchange with Highway 101 will close as well, with traffic still able to flow to the southbound Highway 101 lanes.
The Bay Bridge will remain open during the maintenance work. The eastbound on-ramps on Fifth, First, Essex and Bryant streets will allow drivers to return to the freeway to drive across the bridge.
Caltrans officials strongly urge people to take public transportation and to avoid the area around the construction site if possible. Heavy delays and congestion are expected.
BART will be operating its normal service during the weekend. The San Francisco Bay Ferry will also run its normal weekend service.
