Father Ahlbach’s food pantry in San Mateo’s St. Matthew’s parish was replenished March 30 by shopping cartloads of groceries purchased by 125 St. Matthew Catholic School kindergartners and fifth graders.
Father Ahlbach’s pantry feeds about 275 families.
The $2,000 spent on groceries was earned by the students throughout the six-week church season of Lent as a service to the local needy.
The fifth graders helped the little ones by contributing their earnings, studying the advertised specials in advance, and doing the mathematical calculations so that the kindergartners didn’t go over their "budgets.” The fundraising and shopping have been annual school events for about 15 years.
St. Matthew’s kindergarten teacher Janel Worley said, "I think that children feeding children is as good as it gets. One of our student learning expectations is to become responsible citizens, and helping those in need in our own community certainly moves them toward that.”
