College of San Mateo has clinched no worse than a third-place finish in the Coast Conference North men’s basketball race entering the final week of regular season play in arguably the state’s toughest conference, top-to-bottom.
Five of the seven Coast North teams have been state ranked the past month.
The latest triumph came in Fremont Friday night, 81-66, over former 22nd-ranked Ohlone. Tied at 30 at halftime, CSM came out fast after the break to outscore the Renegades, 51-36.
San Mateo County bragging rights will also be at stake on Wednesday as the unranked Bulldogs (6-4 Coast North, 13-13 overall) host fourth-place and 29th-ranked Skyline (5-6, 18-9) Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Trojans’ regular season finale. CSM then closes at fifth-place Las Positas-Livermore (3-7, 16-10) Friday night.
Both CSM and Skyline have swept their season series with Cañada (2-8, 11-15).
Skyline has the league’s most effective 3-point shooter in Darrin Lum, with a 47.1 percentage (82 of 174). Achilles Woodson of Skyline is the No. 3 scorer in the conference with a 17.3 average. Luca Joe Ewelt of Cañada is the league’s top rebounder, with a 9.6 average. CSM’s Pawllos Habtom and Woodson are fourth with 7.3 averages.
CSM is on a three-game winning streak, having lost just to 13-time champion City College of San Francisco in the second half of conference play. The only other Bulldogs setback over the past month was at Skyline, 71-66.
Skyline dropped a pair last week, falling at Chabot, 75-62, and then against visiting San Francisco, which clinched its 13th consecutive conference title with the 94-66 victory.
Cañada, which opened the second half of league play with a 76-72 upset of then fourth-ranked Chabot, visits Ohlone (3-7, 13-13) Wednesday at 7 p.m. and finishes hosting CCSF (9-1, 21-5) on Friday at 5 p.m.
