Carlmont freshman pitcher Ashley Chinn showed yesterday you don't have to be an upper classman to be good as she worked a full game in a 4-2 victory over St. Francis of Mountain View.
Chinn, who threw 84 pitches on the day and struck out five, held the Lancers to just two hits going into the top of the seventh inning. St. Francis rallied with back-to-back triples and two runs, but Chinn struck out the last batter to preserve her team's win.
The Scots found themselves on the board first in the bottom of the second. Lindsey Garehime, who went 3-for-3 and stole three bases, belted her first hit to lead off the inning. After being moved to second on a Bernadette Pisani sacrifice bunt and then stealing third, she ran for home as the first baseman fumbled the ball while attempting to tag out Chinn. Garehime initially missed the plate as she tried to dodge the catcher, who was waiting with the ball, but managed to scramble back before being caught.
Chinn meanwhile continued to pitch an excellent game in conjunction with a solid Carlmont defense. The middle innings for the freshman pitcher passed quickly as she fanned multiple batters and quick throws to first by other infielders took care of the rest.
St. Francis starting pitcher Mollie Hoo worked hard to keep up with Chinn, managing to hold the Scots scoreless for two innings. Things started changed in the bottom of the fifth however when Ashley Nicholes, batting second, came to the plate. On Hoo's first pitch Nicholes laid down a surprise bunt and then beat the throw out for a single. She stole second while Keli Leong was at bat, but pushed her luck one too many times as she was thrown out trying to take third on the next pitch.
Leong picked up where Nicholes had left off, reaching first on a hit. The Lancers switched pitchers, hoping to stop what they saw as a rally. The inning was not to be theirs however, as Celina Castillo came to bat and on a 1-2 count crushed the ball deep to left, coming up with a triple and driving Leong home. Garehime drove Castillo home next before repeating her performance from earlier as she stole a base before scoring on Pisani single.

Facing down St. Francis in the top of the seventh, Chinn sought to wrap things up quickly as she had done for most of the game. The Lancers showed though they had a little spark as they led off with two triples and a run batted in. After scoring another run off of a sacrifice, St. Francis fell short as Chinn closed the door on them.
"I worked hard today but thought I could have spotted the ball a little better," said Chinn, who improved her record to 3-0. "Everything I think went well because our defense was there."
When faced with the late St. Francis rally, Chinn said she had to focus more in order to stop them as she started working harder to hit her spots.
"I thought Ashley pitched very well as a freshman," said Carlmont coach Jim Liggett. "As a team though we are not hitting as we should be we will come around."
