The Sharks scored 40 first-half points and rode that to the non-league win over the Mavericks.
Oceana (3-3 overall) led 22-14 after the first quarter before outscoring Nueva (1-5) 18-8 in the second to lead 40-22 at halftime. The Mavericks would outscore the Sharks by six in the second half, but the deficit was too large.
Dexter Miller had a big game for Oceana, scoring a game-high 25 points. Catcher Ashkinos added 16 while Landen Chan gave Oceana three players in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Girls’ basketball
San Mateo 54, Balboa-SF 17
The Bearcats snapped a two-game slide with the rout of the Buccaneers in a non-league matchup.

San Mateo (6-2 overall) scored more points in the first quarter than Balboa (2-4) did for the entire game as the Bearcats led 21-3 after the opening period.
And for the first time this season, Bella Fong was not the Bearcats’ leading scorer. That honor belonged to Violet MacAvoy, who finished with 10 points. Fong was right behind with nine and Kimaya Cormier added eight as nine Bearcats got in the scoring column.
Boys’ soccer
Hillsdale 1, Branham-SJ 1
After a scoreless first half, both the Knights and Bruins found the back of the net in the second, settling for the draw.
Tyler Essa scored for Hillsdale (3-1-2 overall), with Bernardo Chaparro picking up the assist.
Branham moves to 2-1-4 on the season.
