Woodside has dominated its crosstown rivalry with Sequoia in recent years, which also fits into the theme this season, as the Wildcats have won eight straight games in dominant fashion.
JJ Lange
The undefeated Wildcats (3-0 PAL Ocean, 8-0 overall) added to their win streak Saturday with a 41-14 win at Sequoia in the “Redwood City Rumble” rivalry game, clinching no less than a co-championship in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division in the process. With two games to go, a win over either Milpitas or Aragon will lock up the Ocean Division title outright for head coach Justin Andrews’ squad.
Woodside used four interceptions and a big day from sophomore JJ Lange to win big. Lange had one interception, and added a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown, and one punt return for a score. Senior linebacker added an interception to go with a team-high 13 tackles. Junior defensive end Henry Schwab and sophomore Kolby Nelson also recorded interceptions.
Sequoia (2-2, 4-4) jumped out to an early lead and took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter. But the Wildcats responded with 21 unanswered points in the second quarter, and 21 more unanswered in the third.
Senior running back Alex Valencia (19 rushes, 81 yards) rushed for one touchdown, senior Daniel Torres (seven carries, 60 yards) added a rushing score, and junior quarterback Charlie Dalrymple was 4-of-5 passing for 70 yards with a TD and an interception, connecting with junior James Yauch for a 14-yard scoring pass. Senior receiver Juan Servin (two catches, 51 yards) had an 11-yard scoring catch on an option pass from Lange.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Sequoia.
