Oh, Mercy, what a comeback. And the freshy led the way, as Mercy-Burlingame freshman McKenna Fua hit for the cycle in the Bears’ epic 15-11 comeback win Thursday at home against Terra Nova.
McKenna Fua
Fua went a perfect 4 for 4 with a single, double, triple and home run. Not only is it Fua’s first four-hit game, she has overcome an abysmal 1-for-12 start to her varsity career by recording hits in four of her last five games, including a 7-for-9 spree over her last three.
Fua’s heroics highlighted a late-inning resurgence. With a chance to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season, the Bears (6-6) fell behind by scores of 8-1 and 9-3. A 10-run outburst in the sixth flipped the scoreboard, as Mercy powered its way to victory with six extra-base hits, including two triples and three home runs. Freshman Isabele Reburiano added two hits, including a home run and three RBIs, and sophomore Aveline Anderson also homered. Senior Elena Gonzalez accounted for Mercy’s other triple, going 2 for 5 with three RBIs.
Terra Nova (3-6) outhit Mercy 16-15, to up its team batting average to .354 on the year. Seven different Tigers recorded multi-hit games, paced by Helena Nieve’s 3-for-4 day with an RBI.
