Menlo three-peats at Roche tourney
The Menlo Knights made history at the 21st annual Scott Roche Invitational, becoming the first team ever to win the prestigious tournament for three straight seasons.
The Knights took down Buchanan 11-9 in the championship game, the team who ended their 2017 season in the CIF Division I Northern California quarterfinals.
Senior Sam Untrecht paced Menlo throughout the tournament. He scored five goals in the tournament finale, adding to his four-game total of 16 goals, along with 13 steals and seven earned ejections. Untrecht and Connor Enright (three goals in the championship game) totaled seven assists each in the tourney.
Junior goalkeeper Josh Poulous was a force, totaling 32 saves while allowing 19 goals in the tournament. Sophomore keeper Zayd Mahmoud added 11 saves against five goals allowed.
The Knights advanced to the championship game with a 12-9 win over St. Mary’s-Stockton.
Girls’ water polo
NDB salvages finale at Stinky Rose
The Tigers (1-3 overall) went 1-2 at the Stinky Rose Varsity Tournament at Christopher-Gilroy, salvaging the final game against host Christopher 13-8. Reigning Daily Journal Girls’ Water Polo Player of the Year senior Michelle Kleytman racked up eight goals in the game. She totaled 16 goals in the tourney, which included a 13-6 loss to Mountain View in the opener and an 11-5 loss to Ann Sobrato-Morgan Hill in Game 2.
NDB junior Annalee Wolfe was named All-Tournament goalkeeper, totaling 24 saves in three games, including 11 in the finale.
SHP takes second in S.F. tourney
Sacred Heart Prep settled for runner-up at the San Francisco Invitational, falling to Leland-San Jose 14-5 in the championship game. Ella Woodhead paced the Gators with two goals in the finale. Leland’s Nina Flynn scored a game-high four goals. SHP was 0 for 8 on power plays, and got outshot 29-14.
SHP opened the tournament with a 5-4 victory over Soquel. Eleanor Facey scored the game-winning goal off an assist from sister Annabel Facey to break a 4-4 tie with 4:33 remaining. Goalkeeper Nellie McAdams did the rest, totaling 12 saves against four goals allowed in the game.
Cross-country
Menlo girls’ take third in Golden Gate Park
The Lowell Invitational in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has long marked the opening of high school cross-country season. And the Menlo School girls continue to be in the mix among the meet’s best.

Junior dynamos Charlotte Tomkinson and Kyra Pretre led the Lady Knights to a third-place team finish among varsity girls. The team slated an average time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds, with only first-place Granada (17:48) and second-place St. Francis-Mountain View (18:45) fairing better.
Tomkinson took 10th place in Menlo’s heat — the first of two varsity girls races of the day — with a time of 17:58.5. Pretre finished right behind in 12th at 18:04.1. Menlo freshman Pia Gallo placed 25th in the race at 18:47.5
Half Moon Bay junior Claire Yerby took sixth in the race at 17:37.3.
Other county finishers include: Aragon senior Emma Madgic (13th, 18:10.9); Nueva School senior Jenna Lange (15th, 18:25.8); and Woodside junior Sarah Perry (seventh in the second race, 18:03.5).
In the boys’ race, Nueva School senior Caleb Dittmar registered the 10th best time overall, and placed fourth in his race, with a time of 15:05.2. Menlo-Atherton junior Ethan Mimeless was 16th overall and eighth in his race at 15:14.2.

Menlo 3, Mills 0
Junior defensive specialist Abby Holleran recorded career-highs with 11 digs and six aces as the Lady Knights (4-6) swept past Mills 25-12, 25-18, 25-19. Senior outside hitter Sianna Houghton paced Menlo with eight kills, while senior Grace King and sophomore Roxy Karrer added seven kills apiece.
Hillsdale 3, Mercy-Burlingame 1
The Lady Knights improved their record to 5-0 to start the year with a 25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 25-23 win over Mercy-Burlingame. Freshman outside hitter Jessica Dean scored a team-high 13 kills.
Men's soccer
Cañada 1, Santa Rosa 0
Cañada College is off to an unbeaten start through three games, improving its record to 2-0-1 with a shutout of 2017 Big 8 Conference champion Santa Rosa Junior College. With the Colts playing just 10 men, Jorge Lopez hit the game-winner in the 77th minute on a clean goal with an assist from Osin Doherty-Fagan. Cañada goalkeeper Manny Alvarado recorded the shutout victory, totaling 19 saves.
Softball
M-A hires Tom Kemp as head coach
Menlo-Atherton announced the hire of Tom Kemp as the new head coach of the softball team. Kemp will replace Rich Ferrick, who stepped down after two years.
