The College of San Mateo football broke out of its offensive slump, beating Sacramento City College 50-46 Saturday afternoon in Sacramento.
The win snapped the Bulldogs three-game slide and gave them their first NorCal Conference win. It also made CSM eligible for a post-season bowl bid.
CSM (1-3 NorCal Conference, 6-3 overall) has been moving the ball the last few weeks, it just hadn't been scoring. On Saturday, six different Bulldogs found the end zone. Fullback Sean Connor scored twice, rushing for 82 yards on 23 carries. In all, CSM rushed for 151 yards and five touchdowns.
Quarterback Kevin Linnell had a big game for the Bulldogs as well. The freshman out of Kennedy-Fremont completed 16 of 30 passes for 324 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 8 times for 44 yards and another score.
Tight end Brent Tenbruggencate was Linnell s favorite target Saturday as the former Serra standout had his best day as a Bulldog. Tenbruggencate caught six passes for 142 yards, an average of 23.8 yards a catch. Former Burlingame star Josh Bizon had two catches for 54 yards - but one of those receptions went for a touchdown.
Special teams also had a hand in securing the victory. Kick returner Delbecio Ben returned five kicks for a total of 174 yards - including one for a touchdown. Kicker Carlos Gonzalez, who has been up-and-down this season, connected on all six of his extra points.
The game itself was a back-and-forth affair. Sacramento (0-4, 2-7) led 13-7 after the first quarter, but CSM took a 21-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. The second half was a shootout, with Sacramento out-scoring the Bulldogs 33-29, but CSM held on for the win.
