Yes, I agree with Julia Lutch that Israel has a right to self-defense, but I disagree with how it is carried out.
The apparent Israeli intelligence failure attributed to the attack on Oct. 7, 2023. The government had to prove strength to combat the attackers Hamas, calling this self-defense.
The excuse in destroying everything in Gaza is that Hamas is using underground tunnels opening into hospitals, schools, mosques etc. and these are now legitimate military targets. What about the 37,658 or 58,765 — never sure what is the correct number — thousands and thousands of innocent people, women, children that are killed. Churches and hospitals are bombed and then it is called a “regrettable mistake”… so far peace talks and reasonable communication are not working but every effort should be made to have peace for Israel as well as the Palestinian people.
Yahya Sinwar was Hamas's leader who purposefully pursued a strategy to create the greatest number of Palestinians casualties in order to get the support of the UN and liberal governments from around the world. Israel's only choice is to fight the war until Hamas is defeated or risk the war spreading into Israel.
I have been a firm supporter of Israel but can no longer stomach the callousness of Netanyahu. Even our President was appalled after Netanyahu proclaimed that there was no starvation the the Gaza. The pictures and videos do not lie. Our news media are not showing the horrific details that are reported daily on TV in Europe. Netanyahu is now a war criminal and we should treat him as such.
Thanks for your letter, Ms. Thiel, and your attempt to blame the victim. The bottom line is that Hamas initiated the massacre while they continue to hold hostages, dead and alive, as bargaining chips. As far as many are concerned, Hamas made their bed and until they release all hostages and surrender unconditionally, they deserve what they get. More power to Netanyahu to finish his mission. Perhaps then, there will be peace for Israel and the Palestinian people.
